Building Blocks
Once you know how to find 10%, you can use it as a building block to find other common percentages:
Finding 5%
Since 5% is half of 10%, simply find 10% and divide it by 2.
Example: Find 5% of 80.
10% of 80 is 8. Half of 8 is 4. So, 5% of 80 is 4.
Finding 15% (The Standard Tip)
To find 15%, find 10%, find 5%, and add them together.
Example: A 15% tip on a $60 bill.
10% is $6. 5% is $3. $6 + $3 = $9 tip.
Finding 20%
To find 20%, find 10% and double it.
Example: 20% of 45.
10% is 4.5. Double 4.5 is 9.
The 1% Rule
For more precise estimates, you can find 1% by moving the decimal point two places to the left. Then multiply by the percentage you need.
Example: 3% of 400.
1% of 400 is 4. Multiply by 3 to get 12.
